Spring has Sprung...and So Have the Speed Traps

On my 47-mile commute today I saw no fewer than seven highway patrol vehicles (six cars, one motorcycle). Even more telling -- four of them were in the act of writing up a citation (I can only assume it was for speeding). Thankfully I wasn't one of the people stopped. Today being a sunny Monday morning on April 17, and this Monday coming just after a holiday weekend, I would suggest today's morning commuters were facing the holy trinity of speed trap synergy:1. Fair Weather -- Like most Southern Californians, L.A.-area traffic cops don't operate well when conditions stray beyond 72 degrees and mostly sunny. With all the rain we've experienced in recent weeks there's an undeniable backlog in traffic ticket quotas/revenue generation. Future weather predictions suggest L.A. is finally breaking out of the Seattle-like climate we've been stuck in since February. Expect police activity to reflect this. (Note: Conversely, when the weather is bad you can basically drive as fast as you want around the L.A. area because the cops are never enforcing speed limits. Ironic considering this is precisely when speeding is most dangerous, no?)2. Post Holiday -- Again, just like most people, traffic officers like to have their holidays off. In fact, I've read reports that suggest if you actually knew how many police officers were (and weren't) on duty during a holiday weekend you'd probably stay at home with your doors locked (unless you're a criminal). So, as with inclement weather, traffic enforcement (and revenue) tend to drop during holidays. That only puts more pressure on the days immediately after a holiday.3. Monday Morning -- Even without a holiday weekend I've long noticed a heightened level of Monday morning police activity. It's the day we all "go back to work" so why should it be different for the police?Anyway, if you got a ticket today you shouldn't be surprised. Multiple forces were working against you.
