Many Small Trucks Weak on Side Safety

Recent insurance industry crash tests have raised safety concerns about small trucks - particularly impacts from the side.

The latest crash tests by the insurance industry raise safety questions about small pickups, which are drawing more interest because they get better mileage than larger trucks.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reported Thursday that several small pickups from the 2008 model year offered dismal protection in side crashes. Versions of the Chevrolet Colorado and its twin vehicle, the GMC Canyon, without optional side air bags earned the institute's lowest rating of poor in the side test.

Several pickups were judged marginal, the second-lowest in the four-scale ratings, in the side tests: the Dodge Dakota and Mitsubishi Raider without optional side air bags; the Ford Ranger; Mazda B-Series; and the Nissan Frontier without side air bags. The Ranger and B-Series, which share the same underpinnings, do not offer side air bags.

Small pick-up trucks have the highest death rates of any vehicle on the road reports Susan Koeppen for CBS. Several of the trucks have poor side-safety ratings due to a lack of a side airbags. Only the Toyota Tacoma received a good rating - it will have side airbags as a standard feature in all of its 2009 models.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI 380S concept to be
unveiled in London

Subaru will use the ongoing British Motor Show in London to showoff its Subaru Impreza WRX STI concept vehicle. If the customers' feedback proves to be positive, the Japanese company will probably produce a limited lot of the cars during the next half a year.The 380S index means that the car is powered by an engine rated at 380 metric horsepower, which is an equivalent of 279.5Kw or almost 375hp. The 2.5-liter engine is "completely rebuilt" by Prodrive's engineers.

The car itself features new aero kit as well as upgraded exhaust system and suspension. It will seat on a set of silver or gold-colored 18.85-inch BBS light alloy wheels fit with 245/40 tires.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport roadster to debut
on August 16th

Bugatti plans to officially unveil its long awaited Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport roadster at the upcoming Pebble Beach Concourse d'Elegance next Saturday on August 16th, 2008. Although named a roadster, the car is actually an open-top targa version of the famous grand tourer.Normally sporting less rigid bodies, roadsters sometime sacrifice safety and performance for fun. Bugatti says that its new car, which is featuring some "innovative structural solutions", will provide an adequate compensation for a lack of structural integrity of the original model's design. Bugatti hopes that the 16.4 Grand Sport will be the fastest open-top in the world.

It seems that the vehicles' future owners will have to manually remove the roofs and leave them in garages since there is definitely not enough space to keep the roof onboard.

Volkswagen will start building Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport roadsters in spring 2009. The vehicle's price is still unknown.[autoreview.belproject.com]
